PUBLIC HOUSING REDEVELOPMENT
The design of New York City's existing public housing stock is primarily based on Le Corbusier's "Tower In The Park" concept and was largely produced under the direction of Robert Moses. Much of the public housing developments are in an increasingly dire state of repair. To address this growing problem, a proposal has been presented to completely redesign existing developments to provide new and vastly superior housing to current residents as well as significant new housing units available to individuals and families across a wide income range. The redesign goes far beyond simply housing, however. With greater utilization of the land, significant amounts of commercial space, community facilities, parks, schools, and parking shall be provided, providing services, employment opportunities, and the infrastructure needed to provide a high standard of living for current and future residents.
Proposed is a redesign of the Mitchell Houses located in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. The proposal entails doubling the existing housing stock, over 1 million square feet of commercial space, and significant parkland, school, and parking expansion.
